How Trim Ends Up Penetrating the Membrane
Most traditional exterior trim, wood, precast concrete, and many GFRC installations among them, get mechanically fastened to a building. Screws, nails, or anchors go through the trim and into the wall assembly behind it, which almost always means going through the water-resistive barrier, the membrane responsible for keeping bulk water out of the wall cavity.
Each of those fasteners is a potential entry point. Manufacturers and installers rely on flashing, sealant, and careful detailing around every one of them to keep water out despite the hole.
